EXPERIENCE MATTERS

I’m Dyana Limon-Mercado and I’m running for Travis County Clerk because public service is a labor of love – love for community and justice. The role of County Clerk is critical to ensuring that our community values are reflected through the day-to-day administration of government and that all those living in and doing business in Travis County know that government works for the people.

WHAT IS A COUNTY CLERK?

The Clerk is one of the oldest known officials in local government with beginnings back to Ancient Greece. The name is derived from the Latin word clericus which describes a person who could read, write, and serve as a notary or recorder. Texas established the position of County Clerk in 1836.

THE COUNTY CLERK:

  • Serves as clerk and custodian of records for the commissioners court, and civil, probate, and misdemeanor court proceedings;

  • Acts as a recorder and custodian of important public records, including all bonds, deeds, birth and death certificates, assumed names, and livestock brands;

  • Issues marriage licenses;

  • Serves as chief elections officer for the county, conducts elections, handles early voting,  prepares ballots, procures and maintains voting machines, and recruits and trains poll workers.
